Former TMC MLA Aditi Munshi and Husband Seek Anticipatory Bail in Kolkata High Court

Kolkata, May 21: Former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Aditi Munshi and her husband, Debaraj Chakraborty, approached the Kolkata High Court on Thursday. They expressed concerns about potential arrest over allegations of possessing assets beyond their known income.

Aditi Munshi, who previously represented Rajarhat-Gopalpur, and Debaraj Chakraborty, a TMC councillor in Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, voiced their apprehensions. Recently, Debaraj was detained by police for questioning related to post-poll violence from 2021.

Their lawyer filed a plea for anticipatory bail in the High Court on Thursday. Justice Joy Sengupta allowed the registration of the case, with a hearing expected on Friday.

In the wake of a government change in the state, several TMC leaders have been arrested on corruption charges. Amid this atmosphere, Aditi and Debaraj fear they may also be implicated in similar allegations.

Notably, TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee had nominated popular singer Aditi Munshi for the Rajarhat-Gopalpur seat in the 2021 assembly elections, replacing incumbent Purnendu Basu. The BJP candidate opposing her was Samik Bhattacharya, who currently serves as the state BJP president. Aditi won the seat by defeating Samik by nearly 25,000 votes.

However, many believe that Debaraj played a significant role in Aditi’s victory. The TMC also fielded Aditi in this year’s assembly elections from the same seat, with Debaraj assisting her campaign. Unfortunately, Aditi lost to BJP’s Tarun Jyoti Tiwari.

In connection with this case, police arrested a man named Amit Chakraborty on Tuesday, reportedly a close associate of Debaraj. According to police sources, it was alleged that an attempt was made to obstruct the BJP’s victory procession on May 4, the day of the assembly vote counting.

Amit was arrested on these charges, following the earlier arrests of Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation councillors Samresh Chakraborty and Hemant Chaudhary. Recently, Debaraj was also taken into custody concerning violence related to the 2021 assembly election results.
