Hyderabad, May 21: The Telangana government has announced an increase in the minimum wage for workers across the state. Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao stated on Thursday that this decision was made based on the recommendations of a cabinet sub-committee chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka.
For unskilled workers, the minimum wage has been raised from ₹12,750 to ₹16,000. The minimum wage for semi-skilled workers has been revised from ₹13,152 to ₹17,000.
The Chief Minister informed the media that the minimum wage for skilled workers has increased from ₹13,772 to ₹18,500, while for highly skilled workers, the wage has been set at ₹20,000, up from ₹14,607.
He congratulated the workers and mentioned that this decision by the state government will take effect from June 1, benefiting approximately 11.1 million workers.
The Chief Minister criticized the previous government for neglecting the welfare of workers. He noted that the government has established three geographical zones: Zone 1 for municipalities, Zone 2 for municipal corporations, and Zone 3 for rural areas, to determine the minimum wage structure.
He claimed that this is the first time since the formation of the state that a decision has been made specifically for the welfare of workers, emphasizing that the previous government had failed in its responsibilities.
Rao highlighted that the Congress government has acted responsibly, making a decision that serves the best interests of workers.
He also urged the youth to move beyond the mindset that focuses solely on careers in information technology (IT) or settling in the United States. He stated that education should not be wasted on paths that do not lead to employment opportunities. Technical skills can open doors to numerous opportunities in countries like Germany, Japan, and Singapore. This is why the state government has established a ‘Skill University’ to empower and encourage the youth. They should focus their attention and efforts in this direction.
The Chief Minister remembered the contributions of former Union Minister G. Venkataswamy, stating that his name comes to mind whenever the term ‘workers’ leader’ is mentioned. He praised Venkataswamy’s son and the state’s Labor Minister, Vivek Venkataswamy, for making commendable decisions aimed at the welfare of the labor class.
