Tensions Rise as Adhir Chowdhury Faces Protests in Baharampur During Bengal Elections

Kolkata, April 6: Tensions escalated once again during Congress candidate Adhir Chowdhury’s election rally in Baharampur, Murshidabad district, West Bengal, on Sunday. Supporters of the Trinamool Congress raised slogans of “Go back” at three different locations against him.

Coincidentally, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was also scheduled to hold an election rally in Baharampur on the same day. To prevent any untoward incidents, a significant number of central forces and police were deployed.

Adhir Chowdhury commenced his campaign in the Baharampur assembly constituency early in the morning. He started from Mohan Roy Para Chowrasta in Ward No. 5, primarily campaigning on foot, accompanied by local Congress leaders and party workers. Following the unrest from Saturday, heavy deployment of central forces and police was ensured from the start of the campaign on Sunday.

However, he faced protests at three locations—Dayamayi Kali Bari area in Ward No. 3, Dayanagar Chowrasta, and Kandnagar Road—where Trinamool Congress workers demonstrated against him. The police and central forces present managed to control the situation.

Notably, on Saturday evening, the West Bengal police initiated disciplinary action against the officer in charge of Baharampur and began proceedings against four members of the Trinamool Congress for allegedly obstructing Chowdhury’s campaign illegally.

On Saturday morning, Adhir Chowdhury was campaigning with his supporters when he reportedly encountered obstacles from Trinamool Congress workers upon entering Ward No. 19.

According to a senior Congress leader and former MP, the Trinamool Congress is systematically obstructing their campaign out of fear of the election results, resorting to violence and intimidation.

However, local Trinamool Congress councilor Bhishmadev Karmakar dismissed these allegations, labeling Chowdhury a traitor who is attempting to create chaos by bringing in outsiders. Local residents have protested against him.

Interestingly, on Friday night, Adhir Chowdhury was also targeted by protests. A group of Trinamool leaders and workers shouted “Go back” as soon as they spotted him. This incident occurred on Abdus Samad Road in Baharampur while Chowdhury was visiting a district Congress leader hospitalized due to illness. Upon his return, Trinamool workers allegedly shouted slogans against him.
