South Korean Warship to Participate in Multinational Military Exercises

Washington, May 11: The South Korean Navy has confirmed that one of its warships will participate in a fleet review and multinational military exercises scheduled to take place in the United States over the next two months.

According to an official statement from the Navy, the 4,400-ton ROKS Munmu the Great destroyer will depart from its naval base on Jeju Island on Monday. The ship is set to join the international fleet review in New York from July 3 to 8.

Yonhap News Agency reports that approximately 100 naval vessels from nearly 50 countries, including Canada, the UK, Japan, and Spain, will take part in this fleet review.

Before the fleet review, the destroyer will also engage in multinational field training at the end of next month. This exercise will be held off the eastern coast of Norfolk, Virginia, home to a major U.S. naval base.

The military exercise will be hosted by the U.S. Second Fleet, which is responsible for operations along the U.S. East Coast and in the North Atlantic Ocean. Around 30 naval vessels from 18 countries, including Brazil, France, and the UK, are expected to participate in the training.

The name ‘Munmu the Great’ honors a king from the ancient Silla Kingdom (57 BC – 935 AD). The ship will also conduct promotional activities for South Korean naval vessels and weapon systems at ports in Mexico and Colombia.

During its return journey, the destroyer will stop at Cartagena in Colombia and San Diego in the United States. Ceremonies will be held there to honor soldiers and veterans who fought alongside South Korea during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953.

Meanwhile, a meeting between top defense officials from South Korea and the United States is also scheduled for Monday in Washington. This discussion will focus on the process of transferring wartime operational control (OPCON) from the U.S. to South Korea, as well as plans for South Korea to acquire nuclear-powered submarines.
