Bhubaneswar, February 3: A local court in Bhubaneswar sentenced nine Bangladeshi nationals to two years of rigorous imprisonment for entering India without valid passports, visas, or any other legal travel documents.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convicted individuals. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional three months of rigorous imprisonment.
According to police sources, on March 8, 2025, based on reliable information, the Special Task Force (STF) of Odisha Police arrested ten Bangladeshi nationals, including a minor, at Bhubaneswar railway station.
Special Public Prosecutor R.R. Brahma stated that during interrogation, the accused gave evasive statements and attempted to escape from the raiding team. They could not present passports, visas, or any other valid travel documents when asked. They also admitted to secretly entering India through the forests of Assam at night without any valid documents.
The Bangladeshi nationals had clandestinely entered India and were residing in Bhubaneswar by hiding their true identities. The STF registered a case and arrested them.
Following a successful investigation, a charge sheet was filed on May 5 last year against the accused under Section 14 of the Foreigners Act, 1946, for violating India’s immigration laws. During the trial, the prosecution examined six witnesses and submitted 14 relevant documents.
The minor taken into custody was sent to a juvenile home in Berhampur as per the order of the Bhubaneswar Juvenile Justice Board.
It is noteworthy that the Odisha government has recently intensified efforts to identify and deport Bangladeshi nationals residing illegally in various parts of the state.
In response to a question in the Odisha Assembly in December 2025, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi stated that since the BJP-led government came to power in June 2024, 51 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants have been identified in Odisha.
