Ahmedabad, May 20: Students at the National Institute of Design (NID) in Ahmedabad have developed a special ‘parcel trolley’ for Indian Railways. This initiative is part of a long-term collaboration with the railways aimed at modernizing railway stations and improving passenger facilities by 2035. The newly designed trolley is expected to revolutionize the movement of goods on platforms.
DRM Ved Prakash stated that NID students conducted numerous experiments, one of which is the ‘parcel trolley’ that has already undergone trials. The students focused on optimizing the trolley for transporting parcels efficiently.
A successful trial of the ‘parcel trolley’ was conducted at the Kalupur railway station in Ahmedabad, where porters appreciated its ease of use.
Namit Sharma, Head of Transportation and Automobile Design at NID, mentioned that feedback from porters was crucial. They expressed satisfaction with the trolley’s design, noting its lightweight nature. The aim was to avoid creating a heavy trolley.
Following the initial trial, modifications are being made to the trolley, and it will soon be utilized for transporting goods at railway stations. DRM Ved Prakash emphasized the need for further innovations, such as adding rollers to the trolley’s body to facilitate quicker loading of parcels onto trains.
Another trial is planned, after which the trolley will be deployed wherever needed.
Railway officials noted that this specialized parcel trolley has been designed with ergonomics in mind, ensuring that porters exert less effort while increasing their work speed. This design will also allow for smoother operations on crowded platforms.
