Navi Mumbai, May 20: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has made significant strides in a bribery case at the APMC office in Navi Mumbai, arresting two officials. This action followed a complaint from a contractor regarding demands for bribes.
According to ACB Deputy Superintendent Dharmaraj Sonke, the complainant is a contractor who received a contract for annual maintenance work from the Mumbai Agricultural Produce Market Committee. Allegations state that the contractor was asked for a bribe in exchange for the release of payment related to the work. Initially, a commission of approximately ₹1,46,000 was demanded on the remaining bill amount, which was later negotiated down to ₹1,40,000.
After receiving the complaint, the ACB initiated an investigation and devised a plan to catch the accused. During the operation, Samir Mhatre was caught red-handed accepting the bribe in his cabin on Tuesday and was promptly arrested.
The investigation also revealed that Sharad Awate, the APMC’s Deputy Secretary, had directed Mhatre to accept the bribe. Based on this information, the ACB took further action and detained Awate as well.
Following the arrests, the ACB has registered a case against both individuals under the relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The investigation is ongoing, and officials are working to uncover any additional individuals involved in this bribery network.
This operation has sent shockwaves through the APMC office, prompting serious administrative responses. Authorities are committed to taking stringent measures to prevent such incidents in the future. Investigative agencies have stated that there will be no leniency in corruption-related cases, and strict action will be taken against those found guilty.
