Trinamool Congress Councillor Debaraj Chakraborty Detained in Kolkata

Kolkata, May 20: Authorities reported on Wednesday that Debaraj Chakraborty, a councillor from the Trinamool Congress and husband of former MLA and singer Aditi Munshi, has been detained by the police.

However, the police have not yet confirmed whether Chakraborty, who is closely associated with Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee, has been formally arrested. He was taken into custody on Tuesday night due to allegations related to violence following the 2021 assembly elections.

Reports indicate that questioning is still ongoing. This action appears to be based on an old case filed against him.

According to sources, Chakraborty was detained in connection with a case linked to violence that erupted after the announcement of the 2021 assembly election results. A BJP worker named Prosenjit Biswas died under suspicious circumstances, with allegations suggesting he was driven to suicide. This incident sparked significant political tension at the time, leading to a complaint being filed regarding post-election violence.

It has been revealed that Chakraborty is being questioned in relation to this old case. He serves as a councillor in the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation for the Trinamool Congress. However, there has been no official statement from the police regarding this matter.

Since the BJP won the elections with a majority, several leaders have voiced concerns on social media about Chakraborty’s alleged criminal activities and have called for his arrest.

In the recent assembly elections, the well-known singer Aditi Munshi lost in the Rajarhat-Gopalpur constituency. After her defeat, she was seen emotionally crying outside a counting center, and both she and her husband declined to speak to the media at that time.

Since the BJP government took power in the state, there has been increased scrutiny of the alleged illegal and criminal activities of Trinamool Congress leaders. The police have been active in taking action against antisocial elements and frequently targeting Trinamool Congress leaders accused of breaking the law.
