Woman Murdered Over Witchcraft Suspicions in Jharkhand; One Arrested

Chaibasa, May 20: A 55-year-old woman was murdered in West Singhbhum district, Jharkhand, over suspicions of witchcraft. Police have arrested one suspect, while three others remain at large.

The victim has been identified as Chandu Purti, a resident of Baibeda village. Reports indicate that she was killed by having her throat slit with a sharp weapon. To conceal the evidence, her body was discarded in a ravine in the forest.

The incident came to light when locals detected a foul odor emanating from the woods on Tuesday. Concerned villagers alerted the police. Upon receiving the information, officers from the Sonuwa police station arrived at the scene and discovered the body approximately 200 meters from the victim’s home.

During the investigation, police arrested 26-year-old Premjit Banra from Pansua village. During questioning, he named three other individuals involved in the murder. Authorities are actively searching for the fugitives.

According to police, the suspect claimed that his wife had been unwell for a long time, leading him to suspect the victim of practicing witchcraft. He, along with accomplices, then executed the murder.

Local residents reported that the incident occurred on Sunday evening. After the murder, the suspects disposed of the body in the forest.

The Sonuwa police station chief stated that the body has been sent for post-mortem at Chaibasa Sadar Hospital. The police are investigating the entire conspiracy behind the murder and the roles of the other suspects. They are also questioning the victim’s family and local villagers.
