Chennai, May 20: AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) called for party unity during a meeting with district secretaries. Meanwhile, attempts to resolve differences between the dissenting faction led by senior leader C.V. Shanmugam and EPS are gaining momentum. Party leaders are concerned that ongoing internal strife could weaken the AIADMK.
According to party sources, a group of senior leaders is working to ease tensions between EPS’s faction and Shanmugam’s supporters. They believe that prolonged internal disputes will only benefit political rivals and harm the AIADMK’s long-term prospects. However, the progress of these efforts remains unclear.
This development comes as Shanmugam reiterated his demand for an early meeting of the party’s General Council. He emphasized the need to discuss significant issues, including the AIADMK’s recent string of electoral defeats.
An informal meeting called by EPS on Tuesday saw some unexpected developments. Initially scheduled to take place at his residence, the meeting was moved to the AIADMK headquarters at the last minute.
Supporters of EPS claim that most of the 82 district secretaries attended the meeting, while the opposing faction argues that many officials were absent. Former minister and senior leader D. Jayakumar was among the notable absentees. Later, the AIADMK headquarters stated that some district secretaries had informed the party about their inability to attend.
During the meeting, Palaniswami discussed the party’s electoral performance and reassured district secretaries, especially new officials, that the AIADMK has previously recovered from challenging political periods and significant electoral losses.
Meanwhile, Shanmugam held a separate meeting with supportive legislators and officials at his office. In a conversation with reporters afterward, he stated that his faction is open to dialogue but emphasized the need for the General Council meeting to be convened as soon as possible.
Shanmugam remarked, “We are ready for talks, but the General Council meeting should happen soon. Our goal is to strengthen and unify the AIADMK by bringing back expelled leaders and distant workers.”
He also claimed that Palaniswami has removed 31 district secretaries from their positions to date. In the latest organizational reshuffle, former MLA Elambai R. Tamilselvan was removed from the position of Perambalur district secretary on Tuesday evening.
