Washington, May 20: Admiral Brad Cooper defended the military operations against Iran conducted during the Trump administration, stating that Iran’s military strength has been “significantly weakened” following weeks of U.S.-led actions in the Middle East.
While appearing before the House Armed Services Committee, Cooper emphasized that operations named “Epic Fury” and “Midnight Hammer” have largely diminished Iran’s ability to project power in the region.
In a heated debate, Cooper asserted that U.S. military actions have made the nation safer than before. This hearing comes amid rising political pressure due to the ongoing conflict in Iran, soaring oil prices, and disruptions in shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Cooper informed lawmakers that the U.S. military has inflicted considerable damage on Iran’s ballistic missile and drone capabilities, destroying 90 percent of its defense industry. He claimed this would prevent Iran from rebuilding its strength for several years.
He also noted that Iran’s regional allies and proxy networks have been significantly weakened. According to Cooper, groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis are now cut off from weapons and support from Iran.
Before the recent military campaign began, Iran-backed groups had launched over 350 attacks on U.S. troops and diplomats in the past two and a half years.
Cooper defended the ongoing U.S. naval blockade around Iran, arguing that it serves as a significant pressure tactic in negotiations. He reported that 88 vessels have been sent back, with no trade entering or leaving Iranian ports. The blockade and sustained military pressure have severely impacted Iran’s economy, he stated.
However, Democratic lawmakers questioned Cooper’s assertions, arguing that despite extensive military actions, Iran still retains the capacity to influence global trade through the Strait of Hormuz. Representative Adam Smith remarked that the strategic situation has deteriorated, indicating that the government remains in a precarious position.
Lawmakers also raised concerns about civilian casualties from U.S. attacks in Iran, including a reported strike on a girls’ school in Minab. Cooper acknowledged that investigations are ongoing, asserting that the U.S. military adheres to the laws of war and does not intentionally target civilians.
The Admiral praised the role of allied nations and partners in the Gulf region during this campaign, noting that such military coordination has never been seen before.
