Bhubaneswar, April 25: Odisha’s Chief Minister Mohan Chara Majhi announced on Friday the state’s commitment to produce 100 million tons per annum (MTPA) of steel by 2030. This ambitious goal is backed by the state’s resources, policy framework, infrastructure, and implementation capabilities.
During an event in Sambalpur district, the Chief Minister highlighted a significant partnership between JSW Steel and JFE Steel Corporation. This collaboration marks a pivotal shift for Odisha, transforming it from merely an iron ore producer to a hub for high-value steel manufacturing.
According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s office, this investment represents the largest single Japanese investment in Odisha to date, amounting to ₹15,000 crore. It will enhance JSW Steel’s existing capacity to 10 MTPA, thereby strengthening Odisha’s presence in the global steel market.
CM Mohan Chara Majhi reiterated Odisha’s long-term industrial vision, stating, “We are committed to achieving 100 MTPA of steel production by 2030. This is a strategic commitment supported by resources, policies, infrastructure, and precise implementation.”
Currently, the state produces approximately 40 million tons of steel annually. With infrastructure development and a surge in downstream industries, Odisha is on track to meet the ambitious target of 100 million tons per year. This investment will further boost the state’s production capacity.
He also announced that Rourkela, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, and Deogarh will collaborate to develop the ‘Sambalpur Development Corridor,’ similar to the development around the state capital. This initiative is expected to attract investments of ₹1 lakh crore from various industries, potentially creating over 200,000 job opportunities.
On this occasion, CM Majhi stated that the partnership between JSW and JFE will enhance Odisha’s capabilities in producing high-grade and specialty steel through advanced Japanese technology and operational expertise.
The joint venture between JSW and JFE is projected to require an estimated investment of over ₹30,000 crore. As the state accelerates towards high-end steel production, the Chief Minister emphasized the strategic importance of JFE’s expertise.
Inviting JFE to expand in Odisha, the Chief Minister specifically urged investment in his home district of Keonjhar. He cited direct access to high-quality iron ore, lower logistics costs, proximity to major industrial corridors, and continuously improving infrastructure as reasons why total production costs could be reduced by up to 50%. He assured swift facilitation and incentive-related cooperation for strategic investments.
