Mumbai, May 22: The Nirmal Nagar police presented three arrested individuals in connection with the Bandra stone-pelting incident to the court on Friday. The court has ordered that all three remain in police custody until May 26.
The accused were brought before the court following allegations of stone-pelting and assault on police during a demolition operation in Bandra. The lawyer representing one of the accused, Saddam Ansari, argued that the identification of his client based solely on a photograph is not conclusive. The defense contended that a mere photo should not determine the identity of a suspect.
In contrast, the prosecution informed the court that the identification of the accused is being corroborated through CCTV footage and viral videos. The public prosecutor stated that the identification of other suspects in the case is still pending. As the investigation is in its early stages, the prosecutor emphasized the necessity of police custody for the accused.
Police claim that several officers were injured during the stone-pelting incident, which allegedly involved the use of paving blocks. During the court hearing, the police described the case as serious and requested additional time for further investigation.
Initial police inquiries revealed that the accused had conspired to attack the demolition team. According to the FIR, the incident occurred on May 20 near the poor neighborhood of Bandra East railway station during an operation to remove illegal structures. This action was taken following court orders and directives related to the scheduled demolition. Authorities had deployed Mumbai police, Railway Protection Force (RPF), Home Guard, and other staff during the operation.
As officials were conducting the demolition, a crowd of approximately 100 to 150 people gathered and began protesting. Police officers reportedly made repeated announcements urging the crowd to disperse peacefully, but it is alleged that the crowd became agitated and attempted to obstruct the operation.
