New Delhi, May 22: Amid rising geopolitical uncertainties, Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides emphasized the need for a deeper engagement between the European Union (EU) and India. He stated that this partnership has evolved beyond mere trade and economics into a significant strategic relationship.
Speaking at a joint press conference following bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Christodoulides remarked, “I initially stated that in today’s world, where geopolitical uncertainty is increasing, the partnership between the EU and India should be strengthened. This relationship is no longer solely driven by economic factors. It is rapidly transforming into a comprehensive strategic partnership based on shared interests, responsibilities, and a mutual commitment to stability, resilience, and prosperity.”
The President highlighted several reasons for enhancing cooperation in areas such as security, trade, technology, innovation, and connectivity. Reflecting on the long-standing ties between Cyprus and India, he noted that their relationship is founded on shared values and historical experiences, with connections between their peoples dating back centuries.
He stated that these ties were forged through shared struggles for freedom and the right to self-determination. Over time, these relationships have strengthened as both nations have remained committed to peace, democracy, and respect for international law. As the world becomes increasingly divided and complex, there is a need to view this partnership through a new lens, as Cyprus and India must unite to face the challenges of a changing world.
President Christodoulides mentioned that strengthening the EU-India partnership is one of Cyprus’s top priorities during its presidency of the EU. He emphasized that this partnership is a crucial part of Cyprus’s vision to create a more open union for the world. In this endeavor, Cyprus is positioned to act as a reliable, stable, and trustworthy bridge connecting India and Europe, serving as a link between the EU, the Eastern Mediterranean, and the broader Middle East region.
He described the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) as a “visionary initiative,” highlighting its significance in enhancing reliable connectivity between the Indo-Pacific, the Middle East, and Europe.
President Christodoulides stated, “We are continuously discussing regional connectivity initiatives with the Prime Minister, including the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC). I consider this a very visionary initiative that demonstrates the growing necessity for reliable connections among the Indo-Pacific, the Middle East, and Europe. Cyprus, located at the crossroads of three continents and serving as Europe’s gateway, is ready to play an active role in this shared vision.”
