Devastating Storms in Afghanistan Claim Six Lives and Cause Widespread Damage

Kabul, May 22: Severe winds and storms wreaked havoc overnight in Afghanistan’s Kandahar, Herat, Ghor, and Takhar provinces. The calamity resulted in significant loss of life and property, with six fatalities reported. According to local media, 11 others sustained injuries during the incident.

Tolo News reported that the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) indicated that the storms destroyed roads, wells, agricultural land, trees, and hundreds of solar panels.

ANDMA spokesperson Mohammad Yusuf Hamad stated, “The storms, along with electrical issues and flooding, led to six deaths and 11 injuries in Kandahar, Herat, Takhar, and Ghor provinces. Twenty homes were completely destroyed, while ten others suffered minor damage.”

Residents have urged authorities to address the challenges faced by the affected areas.

Mir Hamza, a resident of Helmand, expressed, “The storm devastated everything, including electricity poles. We appeal to the government to resolve these issues.”

According to Tolo News, a local individual mentioned that all electricity poles were downed by the storm, leaving residents without power.

ANDMA reported that since March 26, various natural disasters in Afghanistan have resulted in 250 deaths, 344 injuries, and impacted 17,000 families.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) noted on May 11 that recent floods in Nangarhar province affected nearly 2,000 families.

Khama Press, a prominent Afghan news agency, reported that the IOM has provided emergency relief supplies to the affected families. Humanitarian teams are assessing the specific needs of those impacted by the floods.

The agency highlighted that many homes, agricultural lands, and personal belongings were destroyed in Nangarhar, exacerbating humanitarian challenges for vulnerable families in the province.
