New Delhi, May 22: Former Spanish international defender César Azpilicueta announced his retirement from professional football on Friday. The 36-year-old revealed that the 2025-26 season will be his final one as a professional player. Currently, Azpilicueta is part of Sevilla FC.
In a heartfelt message on social media, Azpilicueta stated, “This season will be my last as a professional footballer. After living my dream for so many years, I feel it is time to start a new chapter in my life. Although I was preparing for this moment, writing this letter has been difficult.”
He reminisced about his childhood, saying, “When I first kicked a ball with my school friends in Pamplona, I never imagined the journey ahead would be so incredible. I am grateful for every moment—victories, tough losses, challenges, and, most importantly, the people I met and the friends I made along the way.”
Azpilicueta expressed, “It has truly been a privilege. Every moment has meant so much to me.”
He began his career with his hometown club, Osasuna, making his debut in April 2007. He later played for Olympique de Marseille, Chelsea FC, and Atlético de Madrid, and is currently competing for Sevilla this season.
Throughout his illustrious career, which spans over 800 matches, Azpilicueta represented Osasuna, Olympique de Marseille, Chelsea, Atlético de Madrid, Sevilla FC, and the Spanish national team. His accolades include two League Cups and one French Super Cup in France, two Premier League titles, one FA Cup, one English League Cup, two UEFA Europa League titles, one UEFA Super Cup, and one FIFA Club World Cup.
Azpilicueta joined Sevilla in the summer of 2025 and has played 16 matches this season. A pivotal moment in his career came in 2021 when he led Chelsea to victory over Manchester City in Porto, securing the UEFA Champions League trophy as captain.
