Major Opium Bust in Jharkhand: Three Arrested with 20 Kilograms of Opium and Cash

New Delhi, May 22: In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, police in the West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand have dismantled a major opium smuggling network. Authorities apprehended three traffickers in a raid conducted in the Rogod village area of the Tebo police station.

During the operation, police seized 20 kilograms of illegal opium, two motorcycles used for trafficking, and ₹700,000 in cash.

Tebo police station chief Sushil Kumar Marandi reported that the district police received a tip-off about a large opium transaction set to take place in the nearby forested area of Rogod village.

To verify the information and ensure a swift response, a special search team was formed under the leadership of the station chief. The police strategically set up a trap in the forest adjacent to Rogod village. As the traffickers arrived to conduct their drug deal, police surrounded them from all sides.

Realizing they were cornered, the suspects attempted to flee into the dense woods, abandoning their motorcycles. However, alert police officers chased them down and successfully apprehended all three. The arrested individuals have been identified as Budhnath Purti and Soma Hassa Purti from Rogod village, and Mangra Huni Purti from Kotgarha village.

The police have filed charges against the trio under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Following the completion of necessary paperwork, they were remanded to judicial custody on Friday. The station chief noted that a significant portion of the Tebo police station area is remote and surrounded by dense forests, which some locals exploit to engage in illegal opium cultivation. The police are actively gathering intelligence to dismantle this entire syndicate and the inter-state trafficking network.
