Washington, March 9: A new video has emerged, connecting the recent US airstrike on an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) naval base in Iran’s Minab to a tragic incident at a nearby primary school. The footage shows an American airstrike targeting a building close to the school, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of over 160 students on February 28, according to Iranian state media.
The semi-official Iranian news agency Mehr News shared the video, which captures a missile falling in the area. As reported by the Xinhua news agency, this evidence contradicts recent claims made by former US President Donald Trump regarding Iran’s involvement.
The video appears to have been filmed from a nearby construction site. It shows a missile resembling the US Tomahawk Land Attack Missile (TLAM) striking a location within the IRGC base. The report also notes that Israel does not utilize Tomahawk missiles.
Sam Layer, a research associate at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies, told CNN that the missile depicted in the video matches the characteristics of a Tomahawk missile. He stated that it initially appears to be a TLAM, characterized by its cross-like shape, with wings in the middle and a tail kit at the back.
Layer further explained that the video’s location indicates that a cruise missile struck one of the buildings situated between the base and the school. While the video does not directly show an attack on the school, it is possible that the assault on the school was part of the same operation. Other weapon experts consulted by CNN also agreed with this assessment.
On Saturday, Donald Trump blamed Iran for the attack on the school in Minab, although analyses from CNN and several other media outlets suggest otherwise.
Meanwhile, Iranian state media has held the US responsible for the attack on the Minab school. Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeed Iravani, stated on Friday that at least 1,332 Iranian civilians, including women and children, have been killed in the airstrikes by the US and Israel since February 28. Thousands more have been injured.
