New Delhi, May 20: In a significant operation against anti-national conspiracies and espionage networks, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested a suspected spy from Kolkata. According to the agency, the accused was covertly providing sensitive and security-related information about India to Pakistani intelligence officials.
The arrested individual has been identified as Zafar Riaz, also known as Rizvi. The NIA stated that a lookout circular had already been issued against him, and he was in the process of being declared a ‘wanted criminal.’ He has been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Official Secrets Act, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Investigations revealed that Zafar Riaz is married to a Pakistani woman, and his children hold Pakistani citizenship. The NIA noted that he had previously been convicted in a spying case under the IPC and the Official Secrets Act.
The agency’s probe indicated that Zafar had been traveling between India and Pakistan since 2005. During this time, he was approached by Pakistani intelligence officials, who lured him with money and the promise of Pakistani citizenship to engage in espionage activities in India.
The NIA reported that the accused provided one-time passwords (OTPs) of Indian mobile numbers to Pakistani intelligence officials to assist others involved in espionage and terrorist activities. These OTPs were used to activate WhatsApp accounts, which facilitated secret communications.
The investigation also revealed that these WhatsApp accounts were used to connect with another accused, Motiram Jat, who is also implicated in transmitting sensitive information to Pakistan.
The NIA is currently focused on uncovering the entire espionage network and the larger conspiracy behind it. The agency is working to identify other individuals connected to this racket and aims to expose the entire module.
