Mumbai, May 21: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) unit in Jalgaon has launched a significant operation against corruption, filing a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act against Jagdish Baburao Bari, the Deputy Registrar of the Jalgaon Cooperative Society, and a private individual, Devidas Dhansinh Patil.
According to the ACB, an investigation was underway regarding illegal money lending involving the complainant at the office of the Deputy Registrar of Cooperative Societies in Jalgaon Taluka. When the complainant visited for updates on the next hearing and investigation, Jagdish Bari allegedly demanded a bribe of ₹5 lakh to avoid filing a case against him and his wife, later negotiating this amount down to ₹3 lakh.
The complainant lodged a complaint with the ACB office in Jalgaon on May 18. During the verification process, the accused officer confirmed the bribe demand in the presence of witnesses. He also claimed that a negative report had been sent previously due to the complainant hiring a lawyer, which had harmed him, but assured that a favorable report would now be sent.
As part of the agreed amount, the accused demanded an initial installment of ₹1.5 lakh, instructing the complainant to pay this to Devidas Dhansinh Patil.
On May 20, the ACB team set a trap and caught Devidas Patil red-handed while accepting the ₹1.5 lakh bribe from the complainant at the office of the Jalgaon District Urban Cooperative Bank Association Limited, located in B.J. Market. The entire bribe amount was seized at the scene.
This operation was supervised by Police Deputy Superintendent Yogesh Thakur, with Trap Officer Police Inspector Reshma Avtare leading the operation. Further investigations are being conducted by Police Inspector Smita Navghare.
The ACB has urged citizens to report any demands for bribes by government officials to the Anti-Corruption Bureau.
