Sayoni Ghosh Addresses Controversy Over 2015 Post, Reiterates Apology

Kolkata, May 21: Amid ongoing controversy surrounding an offensive post from 2015, Trinamool Congress MP Sayoni Ghosh clarified on Wednesday that she had already publicly apologized for the matter and had no intention of hurting anyone’s religious sentiments.

In an interview, Ghosh stated that she did not personally create the post, claiming her social media account was hacked at that time.

“I have always maintained that I did not make that post. When this issue resurfaced in 2021, I publicly apologized. No one wants to hurt anyone’s religious feelings. I am a Hindu myself,” she said.

Ghosh explained that she was only 22 years old in 2015, and the social media platform ‘X’ was new to her. She clarified that she neither created nor posted the controversial cartoon.

“If anyone should be investigated, it should be the person who created that cartoon. When I became aware of this issue in 2021, I immediately had the post removed and apologized publicly,” she added.

The controversy began when she faced severe criticism for the old post, leading to significant public outrage and police complaints against her. Following this, she issued a statement denying her involvement in the post.

However, the controversy has continued to follow her, resulting in political and public backlash. Ghosh alleged that this old issue is being used to intimidate and silence her politically.

She claimed that BJP leaders and workers have openly threatened her life. “I have consistently raised my voice against the government both inside and outside Parliament, and perhaps that is why I am being targeted. In my limited political experience, I feel that the BJP does not like dissenting voices. They do not appreciate the existence of an opposition in a democracy,” she stated.

Ghosh highlighted alarming threats, saying, “People are openly saying that whoever beheads Sayoni Ghosh will be rewarded with one crore rupees. BJP leaders and workers are making such statements publicly. On the other hand, these are the same people who talk about women’s reservation and empowerment. Can these two ideas coexist? Absolutely not.”

She emphasized that the BJP does not support women raising their voices, while the culture of Bengal has always encouraged women to be strong and vocal.
