Kolkata, May 21: Following a significant electoral setback in West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is undergoing a period of introspection. In a recent interview, TMC MP Sayoni Ghosh openly discussed the growing communication gap within the party and the increasing influence of the Indian Political Action Committee (IPAC). She acknowledged that there has been a lack of dialogue, which has contributed to IPAC’s rising dominance.
Ghosh stated that while TMC is fundamentally a democratic party, it is true that IPAC’s impact has been steadily increasing. She noted that IPAC had performed well in the 2021 elections and had also delivered positive results in 2024, but this time, their performance fell short.
She emphasized the need for both IPAC and TMC to engage in self-reflection. If people are voicing concerns, it is essential to address the underlying reasons.
Ghosh dismissed any notions of internal conflict within the party. As a young leader, she has consistently strived to maintain a balance between her office, youth workers, and party leadership.
Coming from a non-political background, Ghosh expressed gratitude for the support she has received from party workers and leadership. However, she acknowledged that it is impossible to keep everyone satisfied in politics.
Regarding some party leaders publicly questioning the leadership, Ghosh expressed her displeasure. She remarked, “If there were complaints, they could have been voiced earlier. It is not appropriate to make such statements on television now that the party’s performance has not been good.”
Additionally, Ghosh responded to threats received from BJP leaders, accusing the party of normalizing hatred and violence against women. She pointed out that if she, as a Member of Parliament, is facing such threats, it raises concerns about the safety of ordinary citizens, especially women.
She suggested that she might be targeted for consistently raising her voice against opposition. In her limited political experience, she feels that the BJP does not appreciate dissent and is uncomfortable with women speaking out.
Highlighting the strength of women in West Bengal, Ghosh stated, “Bengali women are incredibly strong. Our leader, Mamata Banerjee, is also very resilient. She has filed a complaint with the Kolkata police regarding this threat.”
