New Delhi, 19 November (Daily Kiran): With winter setting in, cough, throat irritation, phlegm and a hoarse voice have become common health concerns. In Ayurveda, mulethi — also known as Yashtimadhu — is considered highly effective for easing these seasonal problems.

Mulethi is rich in medicinal properties and is said to provide relief in both dry cough and phlegm-related discomfort. The Ministry of AYUSH recognises it as a safe and useful home remedy during winter, long regarded in Ayurveda as “the best friend of the throat and lungs.”
Mulethi contains glycyrrhizin, a natural compound believed to help reduce throat inflammation, loosen mucus and provide quick relief from cough. It also supports the digestive system, helping prevent problems like gas, acidity, indigestion and constipation. Better digestion is linked to improved immunity, which may help the body recover faster from cold and cough.
It is also suggested to be beneficial for soothing throat irritation, treating mouth ulcers and supporting overall respiratory comfort.
Mulethi can be used in simple ways at home. A small stick soaked overnight can be chewed the next morning and the water consumed. Mulethi powder mixed with honey is also considered helpful for cough relief. Tea made from mulethi, ginger and tulsi is another option. Keeping a mulethi stick in the mouth and chewing slowly may provide comfort during persistent coughing.
Daily use in small quantities is recommended as a preventive measure against seasonal cough and cold. However, individuals with high blood pressure or allergies are advised to consult a doctor before consuming mulethi.
