BJPs Chandrashekhar Banerjee Secures Victory in Durgapur East with Over 30,000 Votes

New Delhi, May 5: The Durgapur East assembly seat in Bardhaman district witnessed a thrilling contest. Historically dominated by the Trinamool Congress (TMC), this time, BJP’s Chandrashekhar Banerjee emerged victorious.

In the 2026 assembly elections, Banerjee won by a margin of over 30,000 votes, securing 108,888 votes. His opponent, the incumbent TMC candidate Pradeep Majumdar, received 77,954 votes. The CPI(M) and Congress candidates finished in third and fourth places, respectively.

For the 2026 elections, TMC nominated Pradeep Majumdar, while BJP fielded Chandrashekhar Banerjee. The Left Front’s CPI(M) candidate was Simanta Chatterjee, and Congress put forward Debesh Chakraborty.

Voting for the Durgapur East seat took place in two phases. The first phase occurred on April 23, and the second phase followed on April 29. This assembly seat is considered a significant urban-industrial area in West Bardhaman district and falls under the Bardhaman-Durgapur parliamentary constituency, currently represented by TMC’s Kirti Azad.

Established in 1962, the Durgapur East assembly seat underwent a reconfiguration during the 2006 delimitation process. Historically, leftist parties, particularly CPI(M), have had a strong influence here. The Durgapur industrial belt was a bastion for leftist politics for many years. However, TMC gained a foothold in 2011, and CPI(M)’s Santosh Debray won in 2016, while TMC’s Pradeep Majumdar reclaimed the seat in 2021.

Voter turnout for 2026 was approximately 90%, indicating robust participation, compared to about 79% in 2021. High voter engagement was also noted in the elections of 2016 and 2011.
