New Delhi, May 5: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has achieved a significant victory in the Uluberia South Assembly constituency of West Bengal. Pulak Roy of TMC defeated BJP’s Swami Mangalanand Puri by a margin of 17,187 votes.
According to the Election Commission, Pulak Roy received 109,649 votes, while Swami Mangalanand Puri garnered 92,462 votes. The third position was claimed by Amirul Islam Khan from the All India Forward Bloc, with Congress performing poorly in this election.
Voting for the Uluberia South Assembly seat took place on April 29 during the second phase of elections. TMC nominated the incumbent Pulak Roy, while the BJP fielded Swami Mangalanand Puri. The Left Front’s All India Forward Bloc put forth Amirul Islam Khan, and Congress nominated Intaz Ali Shah.
The Uluberia South Assembly seat is considered one of the key rural-political constituencies in Howrah district. It holds significant political importance due to its rural social dynamics, minority voters, and local issues in South Howrah.
This constituency falls under the Uluberia Lok Sabha area, currently represented by TMC’s Sajda Ahmed in Parliament. At the assembly level, it is regarded as a stronghold for the TMC.
Established in 1951, the Uluberia South seat was initially part of the united Uluberia area. Following reorganization and delimitation, it took its current form as ‘Uluberia South’. The boundaries were finalized after the delimitation process in 2006.
Historically, the Left parties, particularly the Forward Bloc, had a strong influence in this constituency, dominating from 1977 to 2006. However, since 2011, the TMC has solidified its position here, with Pulak Roy winning consecutively in 2011, 2016, and 2021.
Voter turnout in Uluberia South has consistently been high, with over 95% recorded in 2026. In the 2021 assembly elections, Pulak Roy secured 101,880 votes, while BJP’s Papia De received 73,442 votes. TMC’s vote share in 2021 was 50.37%.
