TMC Secures Victory in Harischandrapur, Matibur Rahman Defeats Ratan Das by a Wide Margin

Kolkata, May 5: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has once again established its dominance in the politically significant Harischandrapur assembly seat in West Bengal’s Malda district. In the 2026 assembly elections, TMC candidate Matibur Rahman achieved a remarkable victory, further solidifying the party’s hold on this constituency.

According to the Election Commission’s data, Matibur Rahman secured a total of 113,104 votes, defeating Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Ratan Das by a substantial margin of 48,271 votes.

The Harischandrapur assembly seat (constituency number 46) was formed in 1951 and holds a crucial position in North Bengal’s political landscape. Voter turnout in this election was notably high, with key issues such as agriculture, rural development, basic amenities, and local employment dominating the electoral discourse.

In the 2021 assembly elections, Tajamul Hussain was the sitting MLA from this seat, currently serving as a state minister in Mamata Banerjee’s government. He won on an All India Forward Bloc ticket in 2006 and 2011, later joining TMC to secure victory again in 2021. For the 2026 elections, TMC introduced a fresh face, Matibur Rahman, who proved to be a successful candidate for the party.

Demographically, this seat is entirely rural, with a significant number of minority (especially Muslim) voters who play a decisive role in the election outcomes. Additionally, the Bengali-speaking population is predominant, while the Santhali and Khortha-speaking communities also contribute to the region’s social fabric. Agricultural issues have always been at the forefront of the electoral agenda in this farming-based area.

The Harischandrapur assembly seat falls under the Malda North parliamentary constituency, which is significant in its own right. Historically, various parties have influenced this seat over time. Initially, the Congress held sway, while the Left Front, particularly the All India Forward Bloc, dominated from 1987 to 2011. Congress made a comeback in 2001 and 2016, while TMC achieved its first victory here in 2021.
