Lucknow, May 5: The path for establishing a government nursing college in Kushinagar, the site of Lord Buddha’s Mahaparinirvana, has been cleared. In a cabinet meeting led by the Yogi government, approval was granted to transfer 0.405 hectares of ceiling land to the Department of Medical Education, located adjacent to the Kushinagar Medical College (Self-Financed State Medical College).
Under a centrally assisted scheme, the Government of India has allocated 27 nursing colleges to the state, including one in Kushinagar. The cost per nursing college has been set at ₹10 crore, with 60% funded by the central government and 40% by the state. The land transfer for the nursing college in Kushinagar is part of 1.054 hectares of ceiling land located 500 meters south of the Padrauna-Kubersthan main road.
The state cabinet’s approval for the free land transfer will not only enhance high-level medical services but also create local employment opportunities. This initiative marks another significant step by the Yogi government towards expanding and improving the quality of higher education in Uttar Pradesh.
Additionally, the state government has issued a letter of intent for the proposed Amar Deep University in Firozabad and granted operational permission to the Metro University in Noida. Higher Education Minister Yogendra Upadhyay shared details of the cabinet’s decisions, emphasizing the government’s aim to make higher education accessible, simple, and of high quality.
He noted that the government is particularly focused on expanding higher education institutions in every district, ensuring students have better academic opportunities in their own regions. Proposals under the Uttar Pradesh Private University Act, 2019, and the Uttar Pradesh Private University (Establishment) Rules, 2021, are evaluated by a high-level committee chaired by the Chief Secretary, which then recommends the issuance of letters of intent.
According to the minister, the high-level committee approved the proposal for establishing Amar Deep University on 20.08 acres of land in village Pachwan, Firozabad, during its meeting on July 29, 2025. The establishment of a university requires a minimum of 20 acres of land, which the relevant trust has secured. The issuance of the letter of intent will initiate the formal process for establishing the university, creating new opportunities for higher education in the region.
Meanwhile, Minister Yogendra Upadhyay also provided the necessary permission letter for the proposed Metro University in Noida at his residence. This decision is expected to further strengthen the expansion of higher education through the private sector in the state.
