Guwahati, May 5: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged victorious in the Haflong Assembly constituency of Assam. The party fielded Rupali Langthasa, who faced off against Daniel Langthasa from the National People’s Party. In a closely contested election, the people of Haflong chose to represent the BJP candidate.
Rupali secured 78,674 votes, defeating Daniel by a margin of 50,306 votes, who garnered 28,368 votes.
Voting in the Haflong constituency took place on April 9, with a remarkable turnout. The constituency recorded an impressive voter turnout of 82.48%. Out of a total of 158,640 registered voters, there were 78,514 male voters and 80,126 female voters.
This election saw three candidates vying for the seat: Rupali Langthasa from the BJP, Daniel Langthasa from the National People’s Party, and Nandita Garloza from Congress.
In the previous election, the BJP retained this seat by nominating Nandita Garloza, who defeated Nirmal Langthasa, the son of former Deputy Chief Minister Gobinda Chandra Langthasa, by a significant margin. The BJP’s Bir Bhadra Hazarika won in 2016 against Nirmal Langthasa as well.
Nandita Garloza switched to Congress in March 2026 after not receiving a ticket from the BJP for this election. She had served as the Minister of Electricity and Mines in the Sarma government after being elected as an MLA in 2021.
Haflong is the only hill station in Assam reserved for Scheduled Tribes and serves as the headquarters of the Dima Hasao district. It falls under the Diphu Lok Sabha constituency. Established in 1967, Haflong has witnessed 12 Assembly elections to date, with Congress winning seven of them. The BJP has dominated in the last two elections.
