Kolkata, May 5: In a remarkable display of support, Seuli Saha of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has achieved a significant victory in the Keshpur (SC) assembly constituency during the West Bengal Assembly elections of 2026.
Saha triumphed over BJP’s Suvendu Samanta by a staggering margin of 50,105 votes, retaining her seat. She garnered a total of 143,123 votes, while Samanta received 93,018 votes. The CPI(M) candidate, Gurupad Mandal, finished third with 10,432 votes, and Congress’s Kamal Kishore managed only 1,836 votes. This election saw a record voter turnout of 94.37% in Keshpur, with the entire West Midnapore district recording 92.19%.
At 56 years old, Seuli Saha is a graduate professional with no criminal record. Her total assets are valued at ₹4.7 crore, and she has no liabilities. In contrast, 42-year-old Suvendu Samanta, who has eight criminal cases against him, has assets worth only ₹10 lakh.
Keshpur is a reserved assembly constituency for Scheduled Castes, entirely rural with no urban voters. It comprises 570 populated villages divided into 15 gram panchayats. Established in 1951, this seat has witnessed 16 elections. Initially a stronghold of the Communist Party of India (CPI) and later the CPI(M), the CPI(M) won here seven times from 1982 to 2011. Congress has won five times, and the Bangla Congress once in 1969.
The TMC broke the CPI(M)’s stronghold in 2016 when Seuli Saha defeated Rameshwar Doloi by a massive margin of 101,151 votes. In 2021, she retained her seat by defeating BJP’s Prithviranjan Kumar by 20,720 votes, subsequently becoming a state minister in Mamata Banerjee’s government. Her victory in 2026 further solidifies her position.
In the Lok Sabha elections, the TMC has consistently performed well in this region, leading by 92,074 votes in 2019, which increased to 103,358 votes in 2024. Although the BJP has secured the second position, the gap between them and the TMC remains substantial.
