BJPs Krishnendu Mukherjee Triumphs in Asansol North Assembly Seat

New Delhi, May 5: The election results for the Asansol North Assembly seat in the Paschim Bardhaman district have been announced. BJP candidate Krishnendu Mukherjee has emerged victorious, defeating senior TMC leader and former state minister Malay Ghatak.

Mukherjee secured 104,516 votes, while Ghatak received 92,901 votes. The CPI candidate Akhilesh Kumar Singh finished third, followed by the Congress candidate.

Voting for the Asansol North Assembly seat took place in the first phase on April 23. The contest featured several prominent candidates. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) fielded senior minister Malay Ghatak, while the BJP nominated Krishnendu Mukherjee. Congress put forth Prasanjit Puitandi, and CPI nominated Akhilesh Kumar Singh. Other candidates included Danish Aziz from AIMIM, Kallol Kumar Roy from SUCI (C), and several independents.

The Asansol North Assembly seat is considered one of the key urban constituencies in the Paschim Bardhaman district. It holds significant industrial and commercial importance and is part of the Asansol Lok Sabha constituency. Currently, Shatrughan Sinha from TMC serves as the MP for this parliamentary area, while the assembly seat has been a stronghold for TMC.

The current form of the Asansol North seat was established after the 2011 delimitation process. Although the original Asansol Assembly constituency has existed since 1951, it was reorganized in 2006, leading to the creation of Asansol North as a separate assembly seat in 2011.

TMC has had the most representation in this constituency. Since its formation in 2011, Malay Ghatak has been elected as an MLA in 2011, 2016, and 2021. However, from 1951 to 2006, the left parties, particularly CPI(M), had a strong influence in the old Asansol area. Post-delimitation, TMC’s dominance in Asansol North has been significant.

In 2026, voter turnout reached 88.29%, marking a record high for this urban seat. In contrast, the turnout was 69.21% in 2021, 73.68% in 2016, and 76.86% in 2011. Thus, the 2026 election saw the highest voter participation in the seat’s history, surpassing previous records.

Historically, in the 2021 assembly elections, TMC’s Malay Ghatak won with 100,931 votes, while BJP’s Krishnendu Mukherjee came in second with 79,821 votes.
