Kolkata, May 5: A significant political shift has occurred in the Shivpur assembly constituency of Howrah district, West Bengal. Tollywood actor and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Rudranil Ghosh has ended the long-standing dominance of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) with a remarkable victory.
According to the Election Commission results, Ghosh secured a total of 89,615 votes, defeating TMC candidate Rana Chatterjee by a margin of 16,058 votes. Congress candidate Shrabanti Singh received only 1,993 votes.
Rudranil Ghosh is a versatile artist in the Bengali film industry, known not only as an actor but also as a writer and director. His film career has been consistently active. He played a significant role in the highly anticipated film ‘Dhumketu,’ released in 2025, and also starred in leading roles in films like ‘The Academy of Fine Arts’ (2025).
His political journey has been equally intriguing. Initially involved in leftist student politics, he later joined the TMC but switched to the BJP in 2021. Born on January 6, 1973, in Howrah, Ghosh completed his education at Narsinh Dutt College, affiliated with the University of Kolkata.
The Shivpur assembly seat (constituency number 172) was established in 1951 and has long been a hub of industrial and urban politics. The TMC has dominated this seat for over a decade. In 2021, former Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwari won here, while Jatu Lahiri previously represented the constituency for an extended period.
This time, however, the BJP elevated the profile of the election by fielding a prominent figure like Rudranil Ghosh. His aggressive campaigning and popularity were evident in the election results.
Shivpur is a densely populated urban and industrial area, home to a mix of Bengali and Hindi-speaking voters. A significant number of working-class and minority community voters reside here, playing a decisive role in the electoral outcomes.
