New Delhi, May 5: In a closely contested election for the Golpokhar Assembly seat in West Bengal, TMC candidate Mohammad Ghulam Rabbani has emerged victorious. He secured 122,105 votes, while BJP’s Sarjit Biswas garnered 38,315 votes, resulting in a significant defeat for the BJP by 83,790 votes.
This election saw several prominent candidates vying for the seat. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) once again placed its trust in the incumbent Mohammad Ghulam Rabbani. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nominated Sarjit Biswas, while the Congress fielded Masood Mohammad Naseem Ahsan. Additionally, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) put forward Sunil Biswas, and SUCI candidate Navin Chandra Singha also contested. The main competition was perceived to be between TMC, BJP, and Congress.
The Golpokhar Assembly seat is considered a crucial constituency in the North Dinajpur district. Its location in a border area with a significant Muslim population gives it a unique influence in North Bengal’s political landscape. This seat falls under the Raiganj Lok Sabha constituency.
Established in 1957, the Golpokhar Assembly seat is one of the older constituencies in North Dinajpur. Its boundaries have changed over time, with the current delineation set after the 2006 delimitation process.
Historically, the Left parties, particularly the All India Forward Bloc, dominated this seat for many years. Between 1977 and 2009, the Forward Bloc achieved the most victories here. However, since 2011, the TMC has solidified its hold on the constituency. Mohammad Ghulam Rabbani initially won in 2011 on a Congress ticket but later joined the TMC, winning again in 2016 and 2021.
In the 2026 Assembly elections, voter turnout was approximately 91.67%, marking a notable increase compared to previous elections in 2016 and 2011, which also saw high participation.
