Garudasana, a Sanskrit term, translates to ‘Eagle Pose.’ ‘Garuda’ means ‘eagle,’ and ‘asana’ means ‘posture.’ Just as an eagle remains steady in the sky while keeping a sharp eye, this pose cultivates stability in the body and concentration in the mind.
While this pose may be challenging for beginners, regular practice yields numerous benefits. It is a balancing act where one stands on one leg while intertwining the other leg and arms. This posture not only strengthens the leg muscles but also activates the body’s nervous system.
The Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, has highlighted the significance of practicing this pose. According to them, Garudasana is an excellent yoga posture that promotes balance, concentration, and physical strength. It is particularly known for enhancing joint mobility and mental clarity.
Additionally, it strengthens the muscles of the ankles, calves, thighs, and shoulders. It alleviates stiffness in the legs and hips, improves balance and concentration, and relieves tension in the shoulders and upper back. By activating the nerves, it enhances the nervous system.
Practicing this pose is highly beneficial. To perform it, stand straight in Tadasana (Mountain Pose). Lock the toes of the right foot behind the left calf. Extend both arms forward and wrap the left arm over the right. Join the palms to form a shape resembling an eagle’s beak. Shift your entire weight onto the left leg to maintain balance. Hold this position for 20 to 30 seconds, breathe deeply, and focus your gaze on a single point. Gradually return to the starting position while breathing normally. Avoid this pose if you have recently injured your knees, ankles, or shoulders.
