Bhadrasana, known as the “Gracious Pose” in English, is one of the most important beginner yoga poses. Spending just 5-10 minutes practicing this pose can calm the mind and infuse positive energy into daily life.
According to the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, Bhadrasana is a highly beneficial and stable yoga pose that enhances concentration when practiced regularly. The body posture during this pose keeps the spine straight and stretches the lower body, preparing it for pranayama and deep meditation.
This pose is particularly advantageous for women. Yoga experts believe that regular practice can alleviate menstrual pain and discomfort. Additionally, it may also be beneficial during pregnancy, provided it is practiced under expert supervision.
Practicing Bhadrasana is quite simple. Begin by sitting with both legs extended straight in front of you, keeping your back and waist straight. Place your palms on the ground beside your hips. Then, bring the soles of your feet together. Inhale and grasp your toes with your hands. Next, while inhaling, bring your heels as close to the perineum as possible. Hold this position for 10 to 30 seconds while breathing normally.
While this pose is easy to perform, beginners should not exert too much force initially; gradually increase practice over time.
Individuals suffering from arthritis or severe knee pain should avoid this pose. Pregnant women are also advised to consult a yoga instructor before attempting it.
