Kolkata, May 5: In the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, BJP candidate Samaren Dutta Ghosh emerged victorious from the Karimipur Assembly seat, defeating TMC’s Soham Chakraborty.
Ghosh secured a total of 105,234 votes, while his closest rival, Soham, received 95,049 votes. The victory margin stood at 10,185 votes. This election saw a total of eight candidates contesting, including Pooja Parijita Roy Chowdhury from Congress and Prabhas Majumdar from CPM.
Karimipur is a block-level census town located in the Tehatta subdivision of Nadia district. Since 1951, it has been classified as a general category assembly constituency. Following the delimitation by the Election Commission in 2010, its current boundaries encompass the entire Karimipur-1 block and six gram panchayats from Karimipur-2 block.
Historically, Karimipur has been a stronghold of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPI(M). Between 1977 and 2006, CPI(M) won nine times in the assembly elections. Congress also claimed victory four times, while the Bangla Congress and Kisan Mazdoor Praja Party each won once.
The rise of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) diminished CPI(M)’s dominance. Samaren Dutta Ghosh last won against TMC’s Ramen Sarkar in 2011, with a margin of 5,085 votes. In 2016, TMC’s Mahua Moitra defeated Ghosh by 15,989 votes, altering the political landscape. After Moitra’s move to the Lok Sabha in 2019, Bimalendu Sinha Roy retained the seat for BJP, defeating Jayaprakash Majumdar by 23,910 votes.
Sinha Roy also won again in 2021, overcoming Ghosh by a margin of 23,575 votes. Trends in Lok Sabha elections have mirrored these results. In 2019, TMC gained a lead of 14,340 votes in the region, with BJP coming in second. This lead decreased to 12,323 votes in 2024, yet BJP established itself as a formidable contender.
