TMCs Senior Leader Defeated in Sabang Assembly Elections by BJPs Amal Kumar Panda

New Delhi, May 5: In a significant political shift, BJP candidate Amal Kumar Panda has emerged victorious in the Sabang Assembly constituency of West Bengal. He defeated senior TMC leader and former minister in Mamata Banerjee’s government, Manas Ranjan Bhuiyan.

Amal Kumar Panda secured 127,783 votes, while Bhuiyan received 116,647 votes, resulting in a loss by 11,136 votes. The CPI(M) candidate Nakul Chandra Bera finished third, followed by Congress’s Alok Kumar in fourth place.

Voting for the Sabang Assembly seat took place on April 23, with a large turnout of voters participating in the election.

The 2026 elections featured several prominent candidates. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) nominated senior leader Manas Ranjan Bhuiyan, while the BJP fielded Amal Kumar Panda. The CPI(M) put forward Nakul Chandra Bera, and Congress backed Alok Kumar. Additionally, candidates from SUCI(C), including Tapan Kumar Sashmal, and independent candidates also contested.

The Sabang Assembly seat is considered a crucial political area in the West Medinipur district. Known for its rural influence, this constituency is often a focal point of intense electoral competition. It falls under the Ghatal Lok Sabha constituency, currently represented by TMC’s Deepak Adhikari (Dev).

Established in 1951, the Sabang Assembly seat is one of West Bengal’s oldest. It briefly disappeared from the electoral map between 1967 and 1977 but was reinstated later. The current configuration was determined after the delimitation process in 2006.

Historically, Congress has dominated this seat, winning the most elections from 1951 to 2011. Manas Ranjan Bhuiyan is regarded as one of the most influential leaders here, having won multiple times on a Congress ticket in 1982, 1987, 1991, 2006, and 2011. After joining TMC, he also won the seat in 2021. Thus, the Sabang seat has a rich history of Congress representation, though TMC has established a strong presence in recent years.
