Kolkata, May 5: In a significant upset in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has defeated the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the Purba Sthal South constituency of East Burdwan district. BJP candidate Pran Krishna Tapdar emerged victorious after a 20-round vote count, defeating senior TMC leader Swapan Debnath by a margin of 16,258 votes.
Tapdar received 110,320 votes, while Debnath garnered 94,062 votes. The Congress candidate, Rabindranath Mandal, received a considerably lower number of votes. Voter turnout in this constituency was an impressive 94.03%, with the entire East Burdwan district recording a turnout of 93.83%.
Pran Krishna Tapdar, aged 43, is a 10th-grade graduate with no criminal cases against him. His total assets are valued at ₹12.9 crore, while he has liabilities of ₹57.3 lakh. On the other hand, TMC’s Swapan Debnath, aged 75, holds a postgraduate degree and has one criminal case registered against him. His total assets amount to ₹1.1 crore, with no liabilities. Congress’s Rabindranath Mandal, 68 years old, is a 12th-grade graduate and has one criminal case against him, with assets of ₹23.1 lakh and liabilities of ₹83,125.
Historically, the Purba Sthal South constituency is one of West Bengal’s major rice-producing areas. It is a general category assembly seat located within the Bardhaman Purba Lok Sabha constituency. The current boundaries were defined after the 2008 delimitation, which includes several gram panchayats from Kalna-I and Purba Sthal-I blocks.
Since 1951, there have been 17 assembly elections in this constituency. In the early years, the Congress and CPI(M) had a stronghold here. Congress won three consecutive times from 1951 to 1962, while CPI(M) secured victories three times between 1967 and 1971. After Congress’s last win in 1972, CPI(M) dominated the seat from 1977 to 2006, winning seven times in a row.
The TMC first won this seat in 2011 and has held it continuously since then. Swapan Debnath defeated CPI(M)’s Aliya Begum by 15,858 votes in 2011, Congress by 37,666 votes in 2016, and BJP by 17,410 votes in 2021.
Despite TMC’s strong presence in the last three elections, BJP’s vote share has been steadily increasing, rising from a mere 6.22% in 2011 to 41% in 2021. In the Lok Sabha elections, BJP secured the second position after TMC in both 2019 and 2024.
In the 2026 elections, BJP benefited significantly from effective anti-incumbency sentiments. By emphasizing local development, central government schemes, and good governance, the party adopted a successful strategy, culminating in Pran Krishna Tapdar’s victory.
This win for BJP in Purba Sthal South signals the party’s expansion in East Burdwan district, posing a serious challenge for TMC in maintaining its traditional voter base.
