Kolkata, May 5: The results for the highly anticipated Shyampukur seat in the West Bengal Assembly elections have been announced, marking a significant setback for the Trinamool Congress (TMC). BJP candidate Purnima Chakraborty has decisively defeated TMC’s Shashi Panja.
Chakraborty garnered 60,248 votes, winning by over 14,000 votes against Panja, who received 45,615 votes. This election outcome has once again placed Shyampukur in the spotlight, as the TMC had maintained a stronghold here since 2011. The defeat of Shashi Panja is a substantial blow to the TMC.
The political journey of this seat has been quite intriguing. Since 1951, there have been 18 elections held here. Initially, the Forward Bloc dominated, winning 10 times, while Congress secured victories four times. Notably, the 1971 election was canceled due to violent incidents, marking a significant chapter in the seat’s history. After 2011, the TMC established a firm grip, with Panja winning in 2011, 2016, and 2021, each time defeating her opponents by varying margins. However, the BJP’s victory in the 2026 elections marks a turning point.
Interestingly, the number of voters in this constituency has decreased over time, reflecting a different trend compared to other seats. Additionally, the proportion of Scheduled Caste and Muslim voters is relatively low. Voter turnout has consistently declined, indicating growing electoral apathy in urban areas.
Located in the heart of North Kolkata, Shyampukur is a general seat that falls under the Kolkata North Lok Sabha constituency. It encompasses 11 wards of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and is considered one of the city’s oldest and most historic areas.
The history of Shyampukur is intertwined with the development of Kolkata. Once known for its grand homes and cultural activities, it has gradually transformed into a quiet, prominent residential area. Surrounding neighborhoods like Ahiritola, Bagbazar, Kumaratuli, and Shyambazar still maintain their identities, with Kumaratuli famous for idol-making and Shyambazar known for its bustling market.
