Dum Dum, a prominent area in the Kolkata metropolitan region, is located in the North 24 Parganas district and is classified as a general category assembly constituency. Historically, this region has been a stronghold of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI(M), which has won here nine times, including a victory by the undivided Communist Party of India in 1962. The Indian National Congress has won twice, while the Praja Socialist Party has succeeded once. The Trinamool Congress has claimed victory four times, with its first win occurring in 2001. Since 2011, TMC has won three consecutive elections, with Braty Basu as its candidate. Basu is a well-known Bengali film actor and currently serves as a cabinet minister in Mamata Banerjee’s government.

In 2011, Basu defeated CPI(M)’s Gautam Deb by a margin of 31,497 votes. The competition intensified in 2016 when CPI(M)’s Palash Das entered the fray, reducing Basu’s winning margin to 9,316 votes. In 2021, Basu maintained his hold by defeating BJP’s Bimal Shankar Nanda by 26,731 votes.

In 2024, the Dum Dum assembly constituency had 256,146 registered voters, an increase from 247,858 in 2021 and 232,545 in 2019. Scheduled caste voters constitute a significant group at approximately 12.72%, while the Muslim voter share is relatively low. This area is entirely urban, typically exhibiting a good voter turnout. However, there has been a decline over the years, with recorded voting percentages of 80.83% in 2011, 79.13% in 2016, 77.46% in 2019, and 74.75% in 2021.
