Kolkata, May 5: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has successfully retained its hold on the crucial Moyna assembly seat in East Medinipur district, West Bengal. Former Indian cricketer Ashok Dinda has achieved a remarkable victory, winning this seat for the second consecutive time in the 2026 assembly elections.
According to the Election Commission results, Dinda received 127,166 votes, defeating Trinamool Congress candidate Chandan Mandal by a margin of 16,241 votes. The CPI candidate, Swapn Kumar Barman, finished in third place with only 4,499 votes.
While the contest in Moyna was triangular, the main battle was clearly between the BJP and TMC. The results indicate that both Ashok Dinda’s personal reputation and the organizational strength of the BJP remain robust in this region.
Notably, Dinda first won this seat in the 2021 assembly elections, where he narrowly defeated TMC’s Sangram Kumar Dolai by just 1,260 votes. In 2026, he significantly increased his lead, reflecting his growing popularity among voters.
The Moyna assembly seat was established in 1951 and has been politically active for a long time. Voter turnout for the second phase of the elections on April 23, 2026, was notably high.
The social dynamics of the area also play a critical role in election outcomes. The ‘Mahishya’ community, traditionally linked to agriculture, holds significant influence in Moyna and surrounding areas, often swaying electoral results. Additionally, scheduled caste and minority voters also contribute to the electorate, but the Mahishya vote bank is often seen as the key to victory.
