
Beijing, March 7: Lhasa, the capital of Tibet Autonomous Region in China, achieved a historic milestone in 2025 when its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) exceeded one trillion yuan for the first time. The GDP for Lhasa was recorded at 1 trillion 9 billion 990 million yuan, making it the first city in the region to reach this landmark. This information was shared during a press briefing by the Lhasa Municipal Government’s Information Office on March 6.
According to the data, Lhasa’s agricultural sector showed steady progress in 2025. The total area for grain sowing reached 29,600 hectares, with total production hitting 175,200 tons. During the same period, the combined output of meat, eggs, and milk reached 190,500 tons, reflecting a 3.2% increase compared to 2024.
Last year, the added value of the secondary (industrial) sector was 46 billion 848 million yuan, marking a year-on-year growth of 9.9%. The contribution of the industrial sector to Lhasa’s overall economy rose significantly from 11.3% in 2020 to an impressive 24.9%.
The tertiary (service) sector is also expanding steadily. In 2025, the added value of this sector reached 58 billion 547 million yuan, indicating a 4.6% increase from the previous year. This growth demonstrates Lhasa’s sustainable economic diversification and robust development momentum.
