Chennai, May 4: Tamil Nadu stands at a significant political crossroads as the counting of votes for the 2026 Assembly elections begins today. The ruling DMK is striving for another term, while the AIADMK-BJP alliance is battling to regain lost ground. Meanwhile, actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vetrik Kazhagam (TVK) has emerged as a major new player in the state’s Dravidian political landscape.
The Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK), led by actor-politician Seeman, is also in the fray, intensifying the competition into a four-way battle.
Voting took place across all 234 Assembly constituencies on April 23, with the Election Commission confirming that 48.8 million voters cast their ballots. The counting is set for today.
For Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, this election tests whether the DMK’s welfare governance model, its focus on social justice, and coalition management can withstand the anti-incumbency wave.
The DMK-led alliance has expressed confidence, with Tamil Nadu Congress President K. Selva Perunthagai claiming that the coalition could surpass the 200-seat mark.
The AIADMK, led by Edappadi K. Palaniswami, has sought to unite anti-DMK votes by allying with the BJP, PMK, and AMMK. However, the BJP’s presence in the alliance has intensified ideological clashes, especially in a state where Dravidian politics has traditionally opposed the BJP’s national agenda.
One of the most unpredictable factors is Vijay’s TVK party. Several exit polls indicate a strong performance for TVK, with some suggesting that it could secure surprisingly high seats, while most polls predict a lead for the DMK.
Vijay has positioned his party as both a political rival to the DMK and an ideological opponent to the BJP, potentially making them kingmakers in the event of a fractured mandate.
This election has also highlighted security concerns. Following incidents targeting party offices, TVK has called for increased security at counting centers, and officials have assured robust security measures at all counting locations.
A clear victory for the DMK would strengthen Stalin’s leadership and further solidify the ruling coalition’s dominance. A return to power for the AIADMK would enhance Palaniswami’s stature and legitimize his coalition strategy. Even without being in power, a strong performance by TVK could reshape the state’s political landscape ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
Tamil Nadu awaits the verdict today, with the central question not just being who will form the government, but whether the state’s long-standing Dravidian political structure is about to be rewritten.
