
Guwahati, May 4: The counting of votes for the Assam Assembly elections has commenced at 8 AM today. Results for the 126 assembly seats are expected to be announced by Monday evening. Ahead of the results, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has asserted that the NDA will once again secure a full majority in Assam.
Utpal Bora, the BJP candidate from the Gohpur constituency, expressed confidence in an interview, stating, “The NDA government will be formed in Assam.” He also mentioned that he anticipates a significant victory in his constituency.
Bora extended his best wishes to the people of Gohpur and expressed gratitude for their support during the elections.
Meanwhile, NDA candidate Munindra Das from the Behali constituency claimed his victory, asserting that he is certain of winning in his area.
The fate of 722 candidates across 126 assembly constituencies will be decided today. Party candidates, their observers, and supporters are closely monitoring the proceedings at 40 counting centers spread across 35 districts.
The elections held on April 9 recorded a historic voter turnout of 85.91%. Notably, female voter participation reached an unprecedented 86.5%.
The ruling NDA, led by the BJP, includes key allies such as the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF). The BJP fielded 90 candidates, while AGP and BPF nominated 26 and 11 candidates, respectively.
The opposition alliance comprises 99 candidates from Congress, 13 from Raijor Dal, 10 from the Assam Ethnic Council, three from CPI(M), and two from the All Party Hill Leaders Conference (APHLC).
The AIUDF has put forward 30 candidates, while the Aam Aadmi Party and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) contested 18 seats each. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) fielded candidates in 22 constituencies, and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) contested in 16. Additionally, there are 258 independent candidates in the fray.
