Washington, May 4: US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy defended President Donald Trump’s handling of the ongoing dispute with Iran on Sunday, as rising fuel prices exert economic pressure on the public.
In an interview with ABC News, Duffy acknowledged the increase in energy prices but expressed confidence that prices would drop once supply routes are restored.
He stated, “As soon as the Hormuz Strait opens, you will see prices begin to fall immediately.”
However, he cautioned that not everything would return to normal right away, and it would take some time for conditions to stabilize.
Currently, the average price of gasoline in the US has reached $4.45 per gallon, prompting many to cut back on driving and household expenses.
Duffy linked the issue to national security, supporting Trump’s decision to confront Iran. He emphasized that a nuclear-capable Iran is not acceptable, labeling it the greatest destabilizing force in the world over the past 40 years.
He reiterated that the government’s focus is on ensuring safety for both the world and America, with Trump making strong and significant decisions.
When asked about the economic impact on ordinary citizens, he discussed domestic policies and the US’s energy production capacity. He assured that there would be no shortage in supply, as the country produces enough energy on its own.
Duffy also mentioned tax relief, ensuring that Americans would receive substantial tax refunds this season.
Despite criticisms, he maintained that energy prices would decrease once maritime routes reopen.
Duffy addressed the closure of budget airline Spirit Airlines, rejecting the notion that the war was the sole cause. He noted that the airline was already in financial trouble and had been in the bankruptcy process for some time.
He added that the government is working with other airlines to assist passengers and employees, implementing a united American effort to navigate this situation.
Energy experts emphasize that reopening the Hormuz Strait is crucial for improving global supply, although it may take several months for conditions to fully normalize.
