Mamata Banerjee Urges Vigilance Amid Allegations of Power Cuts in West Bengal Elections

Kolkata, May 4: West Bengal is gearing up for the counting of votes on Monday following an intense assembly election. Ahead of the counting process, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to the social media platform X to rally her party workers. She urged them to stay alert, monitor the situation, remain awake throughout the night, and report any grievances.

In her post, Banerjee stated, “Stay vigilant. Keep watch. Remain awake all night. Report any complaints. I am receiving reports from various locations indicating that power is being deliberately cut (load-shedding). Incidents have been reported from Shrirampur in Hooghly to Krishnanagar in Nadia, and from Ausgram in Bardhaman to the Khudiram Anushilan Center in Kolkata.”

She further elaborated that in areas where power cuts are being implemented, CCTV cameras are being turned off, and vehicles are moving in and out of strong rooms. “I urge my party workers to stay awake all night, just as I am, and guard the votes in the strong rooms. If any suspicious situation arises, report it immediately and demand CCTV footage. This is all being orchestrated at the behest of the BJP,” she added.

The counting process will commence in the morning with postal ballots. Votes will be counted at 77 centers for 293 assembly seats in West Bengal, where unprecedented security measures have been put in place. Both the ruling TMC and the opposition BJP have expressed concerns about potential vote manipulation ahead of the counting.

The two-phase election concluded on April 29, witnessing a record voter turnout of 92.47%, the highest since independence. However, elections in the Falta constituency of South 24 Parganas were canceled due to “serious electoral irregularities,” and a re-election will be held there on May 21.

Additionally, Mamata Banerjee held a crucial meeting with her party’s counting agents for the Bhawanipur assembly constituency on Sunday evening, just hours before the counting began. Banerjee is contesting from this seat once again.
