Moscow, May 4: Reports indicate that on Sunday, the Ukrainian military launched a drone attack on the external radiation monitoring laboratory of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
According to a statement from the plant’s management, the Russian state news agency TASS reported that “no significant damage was done to the equipment, and there are no reports of injuries.”
The statement added, “The Ukrainian Armed Forces are posing a threat to the radiation safety of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Today afternoon, the Ukrainian military attacked the external radiation monitoring laboratory with a drone.”
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that it received information about the attack from the plant, stating that a drone targeted the External Radiation Control Laboratory (ERCL).
IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi reiterated that “any attacks near nuclear sites can pose a threat to nuclear safety.”
According to reports, this laboratory continuously monitors radiation levels in the surrounding area, collects weather-related data, and helps estimate potential impacts in case of an emergency.
The plant’s management stated, “Such actions threaten not only nuclear safety but also the radiation monitoring system, which can affect timely assessment and response in emergencies.”
Last month, a drone attack at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant resulted in the death of a driver. The plant reported that there have been attacks by Ukrainian armed forces in the surrounding areas and the satellite city of Enerhodar.
The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is the largest nuclear power facility in Europe and ranks among the top ten largest nuclear power plants in the world.
