Karnataka to Host National Under-20 Athletics Championship with Over 1,000 Athletes

Tumkur, April 23: The three-day National Junior (Under-20) Athletics Championship will kick off on Friday at the Mahatma Gandhi Stadium in Tumkur, Karnataka. A total of 1,059 competitors will participate, including 709 male track and field athletes.

This championship will also serve as a qualifying event for the Asian Under-20 Athletics Championship scheduled next month in Hong Kong.

The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has already announced the qualification standards for the Asian Under-20 meet. Many promising junior athletes will aim to don the Indian jersey during this three-day age-group competition in Karnataka.

The first medal event on Friday will be the 5,000-meter track race for both men and women. On the opening day, Jharkhand’s promising sprinter Parth Singh will test his skills against competitors, including Odisha’s Pratik Maharana. Parth had a successful 2025 season and will aim to dominate the men’s 100-meter race on Friday.

This competition will also provide a great platform for Odisha’s international 400-meter runner Bapi Hansda, who is making a comeback after a long injury layoff sustained during the National Games in Uttarakhand in 2025.

Kerala’s emerging quarter-miler Mohammad Ashfaq has also confirmed his entry. Ashfaq will be looking to secure his spot on the national team for the Asian Under-20 Athletics Meet in Hong Kong.

In the men’s 100-meter race, a total of 79 athletes will compete. According to the entries, 93 competitors will vie for the top three spots in the men’s 200-meter race. In the quarter-mile event, 89 male athletes will strive for top honors. The fastest female athlete will also be determined on the opening day, with 37 entries in the women’s 100-meter race. Medals will also be awarded in the women’s pole vault and discus throw events on the first day.
