Tokyo: Japan’s Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi is scheduled to meet his South Korean counterpart Ahn Gyu-back on January 30 at the Maritime Self-Defense Force base in Yokosuka. According to local media reports citing the Japanese Defence Ministry, the meeting aims to strengthen bilateral ties and address shared security challenges.
The discussions will focus on enhancing personal relations between the two ministers and emphasising cooperation against threats posed by North Korea’s missile and nuclear programmes. The South Korean Defence Ministry confirmed the venue and timing of the meeting, while Kyodo News provided additional details.
This development comes shortly after North Korea launched two ballistic missiles towards the Sea of Japan on Tuesday, an act strongly condemned by the Japanese government. The Japanese Defence Ministry reported that one of these missiles reached an altitude of approximately 80 kilometres and flew around 350 kilometres.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff stated that the missiles were launched from the northern region of Pyongyang at about 3:50 pm local time. A Japanese government official noted that the missiles appeared to have landed outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ). No damage has been reported so far from this missile launch.
Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi instructed relevant government agencies to gather information promptly and ensure the safety of ships and aircraft in the area. The recent missile tests have heightened concerns over regional security and the need for stronger cooperation between Japan and South Korea.
Earlier this month, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung visited Japan and met Prime Minister Takaichi. During their talks, President Lee highlighted the increasing importance of cooperation between the two countries amid complex international circumstances. He also reflected on the mutually beneficial relationship developed over the past six decades and expressed hope to further strengthen ties in the coming 60 years.
Prime Minister Takaichi reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to working with South Korea to promote regional stability and described President Lee’s visit as a milestone in enhancing bilateral relations.
