Former West Bengal Minister Files Complaint Against Abhishek Banerjee and Police Officer

Kolkata, May 17: Giyasuddin Molla, a former minister and three-time MLA from the Trinamool Congress, has lodged a complaint against party general secretary and Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee, along with police officer Mithun Kumar Dey, at a local police station in the Magrahat (West) assembly constituency of South 24 Parganas district.

Confirming the filing of his police complaint on Sunday, Molla expressed that he had remained silent due to fear of police action and harassment from his own party. Molla, who previously served as the minister for minority affairs and madrasa education in West Bengal, stated, “I was living in fear, which prevented me from speaking out. I was afraid that party workers might attack and harass me. However, I am now filing a complaint because I trust the new administration under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.”

Molla, who represented the Magrahat (West) constituency from 2011 to 2026, was not given a ticket in the recent West Bengal assembly elections. Instead, the party nominated Shamim Ahmed Molla, one of the 80 Trinamool Congress MLAs in the current assembly.

According to Molla, Mithun Kumar Dey, the former sub-divisional police officer of Diamond Harbour subdivision in South 24 Parganas, engaged in unnecessary punitive actions against a faction of local Trinamool Congress leaders and workers who were unwilling to accept Abhishek Banerjee’s autocratic leadership style.

He recounted an incident where a Trinamool Congress worker was severely beaten by Dey, who also physically and mentally harassed party workers inside the police station. “At that time, as a party MLA, I protested, but it was of no use. Instead, Mithun Kumar Dey reprimanded me and charged at me with his baton. I reported this to both Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee, but no resolution was reached,” Molla added.

He further claimed that Abhishek Banerjee was aware of everything and that Dey acted on Banerjee’s instructions. Prior to the recent assembly elections in West Bengal, the Election Commission of India had barred Dey from any election-related duties.

Earlier, on Friday night, an FIR was filed against Abhishek Banerjee at the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station under the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate in North 24 Parganas. He is accused of allegedly inciting violence before the recently concluded assembly elections and threatening Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress has accused the opposition of politically motivated actions against Abhishek Banerjee in light of the changing political landscape in the state.
