Chennai, May 17: The newly formed government in Tamil Nadu is yet to appoint ministers for several major departments. This has led to rising expectations for a cabinet expansion as the administration under Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay begins its operations.
Key departments such as Agriculture, Revenue, Forest, Housing, Transport, Higher Education, Information Technology, and Tourism are still without ministers. This situation suggests that further appointments may be announced in the coming days.
The Tamil Nadu Assembly consists of a total of 234 members. According to Article 164(1A) of the Constitution of India, the total number of ministers (including the Chief Minister) in a state cannot exceed 15 percent of the total number of assembly members. Thus, Tamil Nadu’s council of ministers can have a maximum of 35 ministers.
Currently, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and nine ministers have taken their oaths. This leaves room for 25 more members to join the cabinet. Political discussions have already begun regarding providing greater representation to coalition partners and allied groups.
Sources indicate that the Congress party, which supports the ruling coalition, may secure two ministerial positions in this potential cabinet expansion. However, the likelihood of some allied parties demanding representation in the cabinet appears low.
Recently, the government allocated departments to the Chief Minister and the ministers who have already assumed their roles. Vijay has retained significant responsibilities, including those related to Home and Police.
N. Anand has been assigned Rural Development, Adhav Arjun has taken Public Works, and K.G. Arunraj is in charge of the Health Department, while K.A. Sengottaiyan has been given the Finance Department.
However, many crucial departments remain without ministers. These include Forest, Agriculture, Revenue, Housing, Cooperation, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), Social Welfare, Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development, Tourism, Handloom, Commercial Tax, Transport, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments, Higher Education, Information Technology, Minority Welfare, Labor Welfare, Dravidian Welfare, and Human Resource Management.
Political analysts believe that the allocation of these departments is likely to occur in the next phase of cabinet expansion. This phase may include the addition of more ministers and possibly representation for coalition partners.
